Why does the medical examiner ask me about my medication use?

Some medications can cause drowsiness or slow reaction time. The examiner must confirm you meet the FMCSA standard (49 CFR 391.41(b)(12)):
- A driver may not use a Schedule I drug, or an amphetamine, narcotic, or other habit-forming drug.
- Other controlled substances are allowed only if prescribed by a licensed practitioner who knows your medical history and has advised you the medication will not affect safe driving.
The examiner may ask your prescriber for more information. Tell the examiner about every medication, including over-the-counter products. Do not stop or change a medication without talking to your prescriber.
