When is the medical certificate issued and for how long?

A driver is certified at the end of the exam once the medical examiner finds the driver physically qualified. The certification is valid for up to 24 months (49 CFR 391.45).
- The examiner may certify for a shorter period to monitor a condition, such as high blood pressure.
- Drivers certified under the insulin-treated diabetes or alternative vision standards must be re-examined at least every 12 months.
- A driver whose ability to perform normal duties has been impaired by an injury or illness must be re-examined.
For CDL and CLP holders, the examiner reports the result to FMCSA and it is sent to the state; other drivers receive a paper Medical Examiner's Certificate.
