What is the purpose of the DOT medical examination?

The examination confirms that a driver is physically and mentally able to operate a commercial motor vehicle safely, as required by 49 CFR 391.41.
Commercial driving can involve long hours, irregular schedules, and physical tasks such as coupling trailers and securing loads. The examiner looks for conditions that could cause sudden incapacitation or affect vision, hearing, alertness, or control of the vehicle, and records conditions that need monitoring even if they are not disqualifying.
