Reasonable suspicion testing is required when a supervisor or company official trained under the DOT rules observes specific signs that an employee may be using drugs or alcohol (49 CFR 382.307 for FMCSA-regulated drivers).

• The observations must be specific, contemporaneous, and articulable: appearance, behavior, speech, or body odor.
• The supervisor who makes the observations must have completed reasonable suspicion training (49 CFR 382.603) and cannot also be the collector.
• Alcohol tests should be done within 2 hours of the determination and may not be done after 8 hours. A written record of the observations is required.

Remove the employee from safety-sensitive work while the test is arranged. To order the test, create a test request with the reason Reasonable Suspicion.
