What is random testing?

Random testing is unannounced drug or alcohol testing of employees chosen by chance from a random pool. Every employee in the pool has an equal chance of being selected each time selections are made (49 CFR 382.305(i)), and selected employees go to the test immediately after notification.
Because no one knows when they will be selected, random testing deters drug and alcohol use throughout the year. DOT-regulated employers must do it; other employers can do it under company policy.
