If the medical examiner finds you not physically qualified, you may not drive a commercial motor vehicle. Since June 23, 2025, the examiner reports that result to FMCSA, and any earlier medical certificate is no longer valid (49 CFR 391.43(g)(3)).

• You can be examined again after treatment or once you have the medical information the examiner needs.
• If the examiner needs more information before deciding, the exam can be put in pending status for up to 45 days.
• Some conditions, such as certain vision or limb impairments, may qualify for an FMCSA exemption or skill performance evaluation.
• If you disagree with the decision, 49 CFR 391.47 describes how FMCSA resolves conflicting medical evaluations.

Tell your employer if you cannot drive; do not perform safety-sensitive duties until you are certified.
