Perform a breath alcohol test
Last Updated: 09/24/2026
Use this procedure to record a breath alcohol test in Med-Stop. You perform the test on your own breath alcohol testing device as usual, then enter the results, print the alcohol testing form, and upload the device printout so the test is fully documented.
Before you start
- You must be trained and qualified to perform alcohol tests (49 CFR Part 40, Subpart J).
- When a breath alcohol test is ordered together with a drug test, Med-Stop always places the alcohol test first. Part 40 asks that the alcohol test be completed before the urine collection begins whenever practicable (49 CFR 40.61(b)(1)). If a confirmation test is needed, there is a mandatory waiting period before it, and Med-Stop's procedure lets the drug collection be done during that window, followed by the confirmation test.
- Once the alcohol test is started, the reason for the test cannot be changed unless the test is canceled.
Steps
- On the Service Selection and Payment screen, select the alcohol service from the list next to Breath Alcohol Test.
- When the test starts, verify the initial options. You may change the Donor ID to one of: Social Security number (if available), driver's license number (if available), the Med-Stop internal number uniquely assigned to each customer, or another unique identifier entered in the field below Donor ID.
- Perform the test on your breath alcohol testing device and print the result from the device.
- Enter the result and the testing device information from the printout (see the results table).
- Print the alcohol testing form: click Print Alco Test Form or press F2. The employee and the collector both sign it.
- Scan the original device printout and upload it: under Forms to Scan, select the Breath Alcohol Test Form and click Upload or press F5.
- To print the Breath Alcohol Test Form or a service receipt, select it under Forms to Print and click Print Forms or press F2. Then finish the service.
Screening test results
| Result | What to do |
|---|---|
| Negative | Enter all the information from the device printout. Next opens the Finish Service screen. |
| Positive | Enter all the information about the test. After you click Next, enter the confirmation test information. With a positive result the employee signs Step 2 and also Step 4 of the form. |
| Refusal to Test | For example, the employee leaves the facility or refuses to take the test. Document it and notify the DER (49 CFR 40.261); the employer makes the final refusal determination. |
| Test Canceled | Used in rare cases such as a device malfunction or missing mouthpieces. Follow the service cancellation procedure. |
Confirmation test
When the screening result is 0.02 or higher, Med-Stop creates a record for a confirmation test (49 CFR 40.247(b)). The confirmation test starts after a waiting period of at least 15 minutes and no later than 30 minutes after the screening test is completed (49 CFR 40.251). Record all the confirmation test information. Results can be:
- Enter Alcohol Level: enter the alcohol result level; Med-Stop uses it to determine the test outcome.
- Refusal to Test or Test Canceled: handled the same way as for the screening test.
Unlike drug testing, a confirmed alcohol test does not need two forms. All results print on the same form.
Tips
- How you scan the printout and save it as a PDF or JPG file depends on your scanner and its software. See your scanner manufacturer's instructions.
- Breath alcohol test forms printed from your testing device must always be scanned and uploaded to Med-Stop.
