State driver licensing agencies

Each state's driver licensing agency (SDLA) issues and renews commercial driver's licenses (CDL) and commercial learner's permits (CLP) and keeps the driver's record. Choose a state below to go to its official site.
When you need the state agency
- Applying for, renewing, or upgrading a CDL or CLP, including the self-certification of your type of commercial driving.
- Checking that your medical certification is on your driving record. Since June 23, 2025, FMCSA sends medical examiner results for CDL and CLP holders to the state electronically; contact the state if your record looks wrong.
- Questions about CDL privileges after a Clearinghouse drug or alcohol violation. Since November 18, 2024, states must check the Clearinghouse and must not issue, renew, or upgrade a CDL or CLP for a driver who is prohibited from driving (49 CFR 382.725).
Tips
- Some states have a separate page for commercial licenses. If the link opens a general home page, look for "CDL" or "commercial driver".
- Vehicle registration is often handled by a different office than driver licensing.
